Performance Improvements (PI) and Ingen Ideas, have recently been jointly shortlisted for a Scottish Environment Business award, known as a VIBES award, for their collaborative environmental efforts in their shared office building. Shortlisted in the Green Team category, the Ingen and PI green team has carried out many initiatives over the past year which have been acknowledged by the judges. The award recognises organisations who have demonstrated the importance of working as a team to deliver environmental improvements – particularly across companies. It aims to emphasise that best environmental practice is not only good for business, the economy and competitiveness, but that it also benefits the surroundings in which people work, live and relax. PI and Ingen’s green team was established over a year ago, and consists of ten employees from all disciplines and levels in the companies. The team initially set out to achieve a good understanding of the resource use and waste output from the shared office at The Soap Factory in Aberdeen City. This enabled the team to effectively manage and prioritise opportunities to reduce costs and improve efficiency. Over the past year the team has evolved and now meets monthly to plan ways in which it can raise awareness and change attitudes and behaviours. In addition to campaigns to reduce energy consumption in the office, the team has also been involved with activities in the community such as the Freecycle initiative, the Recycling Waste in Aberdeen City is Changing campaign, and World Efficiency Day. The team has also organised and taken part in various beach-clean-ups at Aberdeen and Donmouth beaches, and participated in The Big Electric Amnesty – acting as a community collection point for working, unwanted electrical items, in support of a local school. Nigel Ross, Business Development Manager of sister companies PI and Ingen, and member of the green team said: “Our green team has made a demonstrable impact on the behaviours of our colleagues, and subsequently to the building’s environmental performance. This was achieved on a volunteer basis, with our members driven by a genuine desire to reduce our environmental footprint, work in a more conscientious and sustainable way, and make a positive social contribution. The campaigns also worked as great team-building exercises, improved communication and morale, developed comradery, and enhanced our organisational culture. We are delighted to have been shortlisted for the VIBES award. We’ve achieved a lot through our green team, and we hope that we can inspire others to address sustainable development issues in their work place.” The VIBES awards final will be held in November, in the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh.
